great post, this definitely enlightens me to become a smart investor. I have been randomly investing in MF's equity, FD's etc...as and when my advisor used to tell me, but not now. I have been using Perfios (http://www.perfios.com) a personal finance software which was introduced to me by my friend who works there...its as good as a mint in the US or may be better...i suggest all to use it as its very useful !

To be or not to be " this is the question for the new investors. sometimes people think It is hard to say that one kind of investment is better than the other. but i also agree as you said that a lot depends on the investor’s profile and risk appetite.
